If you’re looking for things to do in Prince Edward County, I recently spent a long weekend there with my family, and we had an action-packed itinerary. We explored some of the best restaurants, hotels, and wineries the county has to offer. From scoring artisanal products at the farmers’ market to getting an insider’s look at the winemaking process, our stay was amazing, and we can’t wait to go back!
Why is Prince Edward County so popular?
It’s a Canadian hotspot because there’s so much to do, see, and explore. It has a small-town charm with expansive vineyard views. You can visit beaches along the coast or venture through farmland. Whether you’re a kid, solo traveler, couple, family, friend group, or senior, there really is something for everyone!
What sets PEC apart for me is the absence of big chain restaurants and hotels. In many places, it can feel like you’re visiting the same franchises you have at home. Here, you truly get to experience the local flavour, and I love that!
Location
If you live in Eastern Canada or upstate New York, Prince Edward County is an easy getaway. This peninsula destination is located between Toronto and Montreal. It’s within 2.5-3.5 hours (max) of major airports in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto. Grab a rental car because you’ll need a vehicle to visit different parts of the county (it covers 354.1 square miles).
Prince Edward County Restaurants
Darlings
Pull up to this Wellington Street pizza place. It has an unassuming exterior but this lowkey spot has amazing food and service.
We loved the crunchy pizza, delicious wine selection, and beautiful pasture views with cows. I recommend making a reservation because things can get very busy during the peak seasons.
The Counter Bar at The Royal Hotel
This street-front restaurant at The Royal Hotel had an air of sophistication but I appreciated the simplicity of the menu.
We tried pepperoni pizza, eggs benedict, breakfast plates, and skillet cornbread—all delicious. The food was fantastic, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect.
Bonus? It was just a skip away from Slickers Ice Cream next door! So naturally, we stopped in for fresh, homemade ice cream.
Citizen Frances
This new cafe just opened in Spring 2024. We dropped in for coffee and pastries. They had the best sweet treats and I left with a big toffee chocolate chip oatmeal cookie that was simply divine.
They also had cool knickknacks from local artists. This coffee shop supports the community while serving them. We love to see it!
Gather at Wander the Resort
Inspired by the nostalgia of fireside gatherings, Gather celebrates good food, community, and connection in a relaxing lakeside setting. They have a seasonal menu inspired by global cuisines and made with locally sourced ingredients.
We had impressive entrees including Beef Short Rib and Pan-Seared Salmon. With sides like celeriac purée and black radish, you’d think this restaurant was super stuffy but it was actually family-friendly.
They catered to our toddler, Mackenzie like she was a paying guest! They brought her a colouring book and markers. As a parent, them simply acknowledging her presence was appreciated.
Where to Stay in Prince Edward County
Whether you wish to indulge in the lap of luxury or want to have fun on a budget, PEC has a hotel for every price point.
Angeline’s Inn
This is a charming motel in Bloomfield, Ontario. Everything about this place felt warm, charming, cozy, and quaint. Hearing the story of its restoration and design added a special touch that made it feel like home.
Centrally located, it’s perfect for exploring wineries, beaches, and local attractions, with accommodation options ranging from cozy guest rooms to private cottages (perfect for a girls’ getaway). Originally the Hubbs Estate in 1869, Angeline’s Inn has a rich history, evolving from a private residence to a boarding house, a French fine-dining restaurant, and now a beautiful country inn.
Creekside Cafe
We went for breakfast but this cute, cozy restaurant on Wellington Main Street has a surprising twist: an upstairs Airbnb! There’s the Creekside Suite and Main Street Suite.
The Royal Hotel
The historic building in Picton, Ontario, has undergone a meticulous restoration, preserving its original architectural charm while integrating modern amenities and sustainable practices. The blend of contemporary design with classic elements provides a cozy and stylish environment, perfect for events and gatherings. The emphasis on community engagement and storytelling makes every stay here feel warm and inviting.
Wander the Resort
The luxury lakeside retreat is located on Loyalist Parkway in Prince Edward, Ontario. With Nordic design and country comfort, this hotel is perfect for a relaxing and luxurious stay. They have a Scandinavian spa under construction and I can’t wait to visit again when it opens.
Prince Edward County Wineries
Wondering how to spend a day in Prince Edward County? If you’re a wine enthusiast, you have to put a local winery or two on your itinerary. Prince Edward County has over 40 wineries.
The lakeside climate, and limestone, shale, and clay soil provide the perfect composition for growing cool-climate grape vines. Even if you’re not a big drinker, it’s still a great experience complete with family activities, picnics, and more!
Hinterland Wine Company
This winery in Hillier, Ontario has sparkling wine for every occasion so if bubbly is your thing, I highly recommend it! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the tasting flights are generous and served in beautiful glassware. There’s indoor and outdoor seating with lovely views of the vineyards.
The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards and Estate Winery
The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards and Estate Winery is a charming spot in Hillier, Ontario, offering a truly relaxing experience on its spacious vineyard property. The tasting room, set in a historic barn, provides a cozy yet elegant setting. I loved their creative approach to tastings with individual kits you can enjoy at your own pace, either indoors or outdoors.
The setting is beautiful, with picnic tables tucked among the vineyards, perfect for a picnic-style lunch with stunning views. I especially loved the street corn salad made in their outdoor kitchen.
Farmers Markets
You can’t leave the county without some mementos so get ready for some prime shopping at a local farmers market.
Wellington Farmers Market
This eclectic outdoor market operates every Saturday from 9-1:30 at the Eddie Hotwl and Farm on Loyalist Parkway, supporting local farmers and small businesses. They offer a wide variety of local goods. Here are my personal highlights:
- Papa Ghanoush and Momma Hummus: Ran by a lovely couple from Syria, they specialize in falafel and shwarma sandwiches.
- County Candle Co.: They make hand-poured, 100% premium soy wax candles infused with essential oils. Each scent captures the essence of beloved locations throughout Prince Edward County. It doesn’t get more local than that!
- Beaus Baked Goods: Those buttery flaky croissants so I had to stop by this stand.
- Virgin Mango PEC: The sweet luscious, smoothies were so refreshing!
- Randee’s Bees: The owner Randall, is a beekeeper. He’s passionate about sustainability and offers honey and byproducts like body butter, lip balm, and soap.
- County Fare: This stand offered handcrafted specialty food products. Their specialty spreads and sauces are made with no added sugar or artificial preservatives.
Picton Farmers Market
Picton has to be the cutest town in Prince Edward County! They host a community-run market next to Benson Park & Playground that’s open on Sundays from 9-2. It features local produce, handmade goods, and Lighthall Vineyards’ wine and cheese. Here are some highlights:
- Edwin County Farms: This family-owned organic farm offers fresh produce, pantry staples, and meat.
- Lather & Soak Artisanal Soaps: Go here for handcrafted soap from homegrown flowers and herbs.
- Craigs Crafting Co.: They specialize in natural skincare, wellness, and home decor.
- Honey Pie Hives and Herbals: If you’ve never had honey wine, this is a must try + all things bee-related as well.
