  • Sweetener – use maple syrup or agave as vegan alternatives to honey.

Recipe Notes and Tips for Success

  • Don’t have a fine-mesh strainer? You can use cheesecloth as an alternative.
  • If you don’t have a high-speed blender, use a grater to grate the ginger then strain and combine with lemon juice and other natural additives.
  • Straining the juice is totally optional. If you prefer pulp, skip that step.
  • Use young ginger for a more mild taste.
  • Use fresh ingredients for this recipe.
  • You do not have to peel the ginger, put ensure it is thoroughly cleaned.

Can I Make this Ahead of Time?

Ginger shots are best when served immediately as they lose potency over time.

Here are some other reasons why it is best to consume immediately:

  • the pungent “spicy” compounds mellow over time. Especially if you prefer the sharp kick from the spice, it’s best to consume it right away.
  • the flavour may change once the natural compounds get exposed to natural elements such as heat, light, and air and begin to degrade. However, you can store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a short period, typically up to a day if needed – see below.

Storage Instructions

Although these are best served fresh, leftover shots can be stored in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a few days. Shake well before drinking it because the ingredients will settle at the bottom of the bottle.

If you are not planning to immediately consume the shots, freezing is best. Add them to an ice cube tray, freeze them and use them within 2 weeks.
