Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Chicken Dip is one of my favorite appetizers to whip up because it’s so versatile. It’s like the cheesy, dippable version of chicken wings! It’s perfect for game day or a Super Bowl party spread.
Whether you’re hosting friends or heading to a potluck, this dip always gets devoured within minutes. I love that it’s easy to customize too—you can adjust the spice level or mix up the dippers to suit everyone’s taste. Trust me, once you try this, it’ll be your go-to cheesy appetizer for every occasion!
Is Buffalo Sauce and Franks the same?
Not quite. Traditional buffalo sauce is made by combining Frank’s Hot Sauce with melted butter, creating a tangy and rich taste that’s perfect for coating chicken wings. Frank’s Buffalo Wings Sauce, on the other hand, comes pre-mixed, making it a convenient option for recipes like this one.
While this dip doesn’t use a homemade buffalo sauce, Frank’s captures the classic essence of buffalo flavour, so you still get all the tangy, spicy goodness without the extra steps.
Is buffalo chicken dip better cold or hot?
It comes down to personal preference, but I think this dip is at its best served straight out of the oven—bubbly, cheesy, and packed with flavour. That said, it can also taste amazing as a cold appetizer or even as leftovers. The creamy, tangy flavours hold up well regardless of the temperature.
Ingredients
- Cooked Chicken: Adds a hearty, protein-rich base for the dip. Shredded chicken works best for incorporating the sauce and cheeses evenly. Rotisserie chicken is a convenient and flavourful option.
- Cheese: Mozzarella provides a creamy, stretchy texture that enhances the cheesy pull factor when the dip is served warm. Sharp cheddar cheese balances the heat of the buffalo sauce and the richness of the cream cheese.
- Cream Cheese: Creates a smooth, creamy texture while mellowing out the spiciness of the buffalo sauce. Softened cream cheese ensures easier mixing.
- Buffalo Wings Sauce: The star of the dip, this sauce delivers the iconic tangy and spicy buffalo flavour.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic works best for this recipe. It adds a savoury depth that complements the tangy buffalo sauce.
- Green Onion: Provides a mild, oniony flavour with a hint of freshness. The white parts add more intensity, while the green parts offer a milder, fresh garnish.
How to Serve Buffalo Chicken Dip
These dippers add texture and variety, pairing perfectly with the creamy and spicy dip. Crusty bread and chips add crunch, while veggies provide a fresh, crisp contrast.
- Warm Crusty Bread
- Crackers
- Tortilla Chip
- Celery Sticks
- Carrot Sticks
How to Make Buffalo Chicken Dip
Preheat Oven & Mix Ingredients
I start by preheating my oven to 400°F (200°C) so it’s ready to go once I’ve finished prepping. In a medium bowl, I combine the shredded chicken, most of the mozzarella and cheddar cheeses (I save a little for topping), softened cream cheese, buffalo sauce, minced garlic, and the whites of the green onion. Stir everything together until it’s well combined.
Assemble and Bake Buffalo Dip
Spread the mixture evenly into an oven-safe dish and sprinkle the reserved cheese over the top. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until it’s bubbling around the edges and the cheese is fully melted.
Broil & Serve
If you want a golden, crispy top, broil the dip for about a minute. Just make sure to keep a close eye on it to avoid burning. Serve the dip warm with crusty bread, crackers, tortilla chips, or fresh veggies like celery and carrots. Then dig in and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Use precooked shredded chicken. Rotisserie chicken is a great time-saver and adds extra flavour, making the prep quick and easy.
- Soften the cream cheese. Leave it out at room temperature for about 30 minutes or microwave it for 10-15 seconds. This makes it easier to mix with the other ingredients.
- Save some cheese for the topping. Reserving a bit of mozzarella and cheddar ensures a golden, melty finish that’s perfect for dipping.
- Broil carefully. If you broil the top for extra crispness, stay close to the oven to avoid over-browning. A minute or less is usually all it takes.
- Customize the spice level. If you want a milder dip, use less buffalo sauce or mix in some ranch dressing. For an extra kick, a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper will do the trick.

- Microwave: Mix the ingredients in a microwave-safe dish and heat in 1-minute intervals, stirring between each, until the dip is hot and the cheese is melted.\Ranch or Blue Cheese Dressing: Swap out some of the cream cheese for ranch or blue cheese dressing to add an extra layer of flavour. Both options pair well with the tangy buffalo sauce

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes, you can freeze buffalo chicken dip, but the texture may change slightly due to the cream cheese and shredded cheese. To freeze, transfer the dip to an airtight container or freezer-safe bag and store for up to 3 months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven or microwave until warmed through.
Absolutely! Assemble the dip in an oven-safe dish, cover it tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Bake it right before serving for the best results.
