Baked Honey Sriracha Salmon
This baked honey sriracha salmon recipe is a delicious balance of sweet, spicy and savoury flavours. It tastes amazing and is ready in just minutes.
Salmon is truly “the ultimate catch”. You will find many salmon recipes on my blog, not only because of the aforementioned reasons but because this protein is super easy to prepare and always tastes good!
Here’s Why You’ll Love this Honey Sriracha Salmon Recipe
- Simple: This is a foolproof baked salmon recipe made with a few pantry staples. Simply season, bake and serve! Add a side of rice and veggies for an easy 30-minute meal.
- Flavourful: Honey sriracha glazed salmon is saucy, sticky, and bound to become a family favourite! It’s bursting with bold flavour and has a citrus twist that makes it even more mouthwatering.
- Healthy: Almost anyone would agree that salmon has won the well-deserved title of “superfood”. This fish is loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12, A & D, protein, bone-protecting selenium, and so much more.
What is Sriracha?
Sriracha is a chili sauce made with chili peppers, sugar, garlic, vinegar and salt. The sauce was invented in 1930 by Thai cook and entrepreneur Thanom Chakkapak. It is named after her coastal hometown, Si Racha. The popular Huy Fong Foods brand made its way to North America during the 1980s.
What Does Sriracha Taste Like?
Sriracha tastes sweet, smoky and spicy with a slight acidic flair. Keep in mind every brand is not created equal so general tastes will vary. Once you find a brand you like, stick with it! For this recipe, I used a dry sriracha seasoning blend so I could apply it to the salmon as a dry rub.
How Spicy is Sriracha?
Sriracha is mildly hot. Although it varies from brand to brand, sriracha is about 2,200 on the Scoville scale. That means it’s less spicy than Tabasco sauce (3,750 SHU) and jalapeno peppers (2,500-8,000 SHU).
Honey Sriracha Salmon Ingredients
Salmon Dry Rub
- Salmon Fillets: Skin on or off wild caught salmon.
- Dry Sriracha Seasoning: Adjust to taste preference.
- Seasoning: Don’t just rely on the honey sriracha glaze for taste. I season the filets with garlic powder, Old Bay Seasoning (or seafood seasoning), salt and black pepper.
- Butter or ghee: Ghee is clarified butter, this is the short of it. It is made by simmering butter slowly to remove any milk solids and water. It is an ultra-rich tasting butter, and extremely delicious with seafood – think of that melted butter they serve with your lobster/ crab legs at your favourite restaurant.
- Fresh Lemon Juice: This brightens the overall taste of the fish.
Honey Sriracha Salmon Glaze
- Honey: This adds a sweet, sticky quality to the sauce and tames the heat of the spicy ingredients. It also balances the salty flavour from the soy sauce.
- Soy Sauce: This adds a distinct umami flavour to the sauce. Use low-sodium soy sauce if salt intake is a concern.
- Crushed Red Chili Flakes: Alternatively, use dry sriracha seasoning. You can also use both for more heat!
How to Make Honey Sriracha Salmon
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Season salmon fillets with a drizzle of olive oil, dry sriracha seasoning, garlic powder, old bay seasoning, salt, and black pepper. In an oven-safe dish, add butter, then lay the seasoned salmon overtop butter and bake for 8-10 minutes.
- While the salmon is cooking, combine the sauce ingredients in a separate bowl. Then pour the prepared sauce over the partially cooked salmon. Return the dish to the oven, and bake for an additional 5-6 minutes or until the salmon is fully cooked and sauce bubbly.
- Spoon the sauce over the salmon, serve while hot and enjoy!
Recipe Substitutions and Tips
- Spice Level: If you’re not a spice person, eliminate the dry sriracha seasoning & red chili flakes from your sauce. In its place, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce instead of 1 tablespoon, add in fresh garlic then top with fresh cilantro!
- Another Protein: Try this recipe with chicken…that’s another banger!
- Maple Sriracha Salmon: Use maple syrup as a substitute for honey.
- Honey Lime Sriracha Salmon: Instead of lemon juice, try lime juice.
How to Serve Baked Salmon
- Rice: Serve this super flavourful salmon with white rice. Or try it with Jamaican Rice and Peas for some Caribbean flair.
- Noodle: For a satisfying savoury meal, serve it with Garlic Chili Oil Noodles.
- Veggies: For a low-carb meal, enjoy salmon with spinach, kale or Garlic Butter Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus.
- Salmon Rice Bowl: Use salmon as the protein in a rice bowl with avocado, edamame, cucumber and sesame seeds. Or swap the jerk salmon in this Jamaican Poke Bowl recipe with honey sriracha salmon.
Tips for the Best Salmon
- Whether you choose to eat honey sriracha salmon with the skin on or off, it’s best to leave it on while cooking. This prevents the salmon from drying out as it bakes.
- This dish does well with a couple minutes under the broiler. You must keep a close eye on it, and remove as soon as the top layer of sauce begins to caramelize. You do not want to overcook or worse, burn your delicious piece of salmon.
- Do not overcook the salmon. You’ll know your salmon is ready when the flesh of the salmon flakes. This means it separates easily when pressed or poked with a fork. Personally, it took me a while to get my fish out at the perfect time – my Caribbean background of “well done”/”overcooked” food was ingrained in me. Who else can relate?
- Season generously. If you want that bright, firecracker colour, use a mix of acha seasoning and paprika. You’ll get the colour…without as much spice!
How to Store & Reheat Salmon
Store leftover salmon in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. I suggest reheating salmon in the air fryer at 350°F for about 3-4 minutes if the skin is still on so it will be crispy. Otherwise, microwave it for about 1 minute.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
I personally love marinating my meats and fish. If you have time, even just for 30 minutes to allow the flavour to soak in, do it!
Yes. Completely thaw and dry the salmon before seasoning.
For perfectly crisp with tender flakes, bake it at 400°F.
Baking is the healthier option as it requires less added fat. You can bake salmon in the oven with just a little oil, allowing it to retain more of its natural flavors and nutrients. That means fewer calories than pan seared salmon.
