When I pour this rum sauce over bread pudding, it instantly feels like a warm, decadent treat. The sauce has a rich flavour that reminds me of caramel, with just enough rum to give it a little kick.

I love how the glossy glaze clings to every bite, turning a simple dessert into something that feels special. Having a recipe like this in your back pocket is such an instant upgrade, and it’s one you’ll find yourself wanting to drizzle over everything from pancakes to ice cream.

Ingredients

  • Heavy Cream: This gives the sauce a rich, silky texture that pours smoothly over desserts. It balances the sweetness while keeping the sauce velvety.
  • Brown Sugar: I use brown sugar for its deeper, caramel-like sweetness that pairs perfectly with rum. It also helps the sauce thicken as it cooks.
  • Butter: Butter is what makes this sauce so decadent, adding a glossy finish and that irresistible buttery flavour.
  • Dark Jamaican Rum: I like using a bold, dark rum like Appleton because it brings warmth and depth to the sauce. The rum adds just enough kick to make this glaze unforgettable.

How to Make Rum Sauce for Bread Pudding

I start by melting the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once it’s melted, I stir in the brown sugar and cream, letting everything come together into a smooth mixture. After a few minutes, it thickens slightly and starts to take on that caramel-like look and smell.

When it’s just right, I remove the pan from the heat and stir in the dark rum. Adding the rum off the heat keeps the flavour bold without cooking it away. At this point, the sauce is glossy, warm, and ready to drizzle over bread pudding or any dessert that could use a decadent finishing touch.

Recipe Tip

Add the rum off the heat. This keeps the flavour bold and prevents the alcohol from cooking off too quickly, giving the sauce that warm, decadent finish it’s known for.

How to Serve Rum Sauce

  • Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce: The ultimate pairing—warm bread pudding topped with this rich glaze is a classic.
  • Banana Fritters: A drizzle of rum sauce makes these crispy fritters extra decadent.
  • Jamaican Black Cake: Serve slices with a spoonful of warm sauce for an indulgent finish.
  • Ice Cream: Pour the sauce over a scoop of vanilla or coconut ice cream for an instant upgrade.
  • Waffles, Pancakes & French Toast: Swap out syrup for this warm rum glaze to make breakfast feel like dessert.

Storage

Once the sauce has cooled, transfer the sauce to an airtight container or a glass jar with a lid. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days.

When I’m ready to use it again, I reheat the sauce gently in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until it’s warm and smooth. If it thickens too much in the fridge, I just add a splash of cream or milk to loosen it back up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rum sauce have alcohol?

Yes, rum sauce does contain alcohol since the rum is stirred in after cooking. This keeps the flavour bold and the alcohol intact. If you prefer less alcohol, you can simmer the sauce for a minute after adding the rum, which will cook some of it off.

What is a good substitute for rum sauce?

If you don’t want to use rum, you can make the same recipe with vanilla extract, caramel sauce, or even a butter-bourbon glaze for a similar flavour. A simple brown sugar caramel sauce without alcohol also makes a great alternative.

Why did my sauce turn grainy?

This usually happens if the sugar doesn’t fully dissolve. Make sure to stir continuously while the sauce is cooking and keep the heat on medium to avoid burning.
