How to Make Honey Garlic Wings
Air Fried Honey Garlic Wings
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine chicken wings, salt, black pepper, and baking powder. Toss until wings are evenly coated.
- Place the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Air fry for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the wings are golden and crispy.
Oven Baked Honey Garlic Wings
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, mix chicken wings, salt, black pepper, and baking powder until well combined.
- Arrange the wings on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are evenly spaced. Bake for 45-50 minutes, turning halfway through, until wings are golden and crispy.
Deep Fried Honey Garlic Wings
- In a bowl, season chicken wings with salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, combine flour and cornstarch. Coat each wing in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
- In a deep fryer or large skillet, heat oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry wings in batches for 10-12 minutes or until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels or a wired rack.
Sticky Honey Garlic Wings (Sauce and Toss)
- Heat a saucepan over medium heat and combine soy sauce, water, honey, minced garlic, rice wine vinegar, and sesame oil. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes or see notes section on how to thicken with cornstarch slurry.
- Toss the wings in the prepared honey garlic sauce and ensure even coating. Serve hot and enjoy!
Recipe Substitutions
- Substitute Chicken Type: You can use chicken drumettes or boneless wings for a different texture.
- Red Pepper Flakes: For a spicier kick, add red pepper flakes to the sauce or sprinkle them over the chicken wings before cooking.
- Cayenne Pepper: Include a pinch of cayenne pepper in the sauce or mix it with the seasoning for an extra heat boost.
- Gluten-Free Option: Substitute with gluten-free baking powder or flour if you have dietary restrictions.
- Vegetarian Option: Replace chicken wings with cauliflower florets and use a vegetarian soy sauce alternative.
- Maple Syrup: Swap honey for maple syrup for a different kind of sweetness.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: Replace rice wine vinegar with apple cider vinegar or any mild vinegar you have on hand if needed.
- Arrowroot Powder: If cornstarch is unavailable, use arrowroot powder in the slurry to thicken the sauce.
How to Serve Honey Garlic Chicken Wings
- Appetizer Platter: Arrange the wings on a serving platter with toothpicks for a fun appetizer at parties or gatherings.
- Game Day Snack: Serve a large batch on a platter, perfect for sharing during game day festivities.
- Main Course: Pair with steamed rice or noodles for a filling main course, and drizzle the extra sauce over the grains or veggies!
Tips for the Best Honey Garlic Wings
- Prep for Crispy Wings: Ensure the chicken wings are thoroughly dried before seasoning or coating to achieve a crispy texture. Pat them dry with paper towels, especially if using baking powder for the oven or air frying method.
- Perfectly Golden: Whether air frying, baking, or deep frying, maintain a consistent temperature. For oven-baked or air-fried wings, flipping halfway through ensures an even and golden brown cook. For deep frying, monitor the oil temperature to achieve that satisfying crunch.
- Sauce Consistency: Pay attention to the honey garlic sauce’s consistency. Stir continuously while heating to avoid burning and achieve a smooth, thick sauce. If needed, use the cornstarch slurry method mentioned to reach the desired thickness.
- Serve Fresh and Hot: Toss the wings in the honey garlic sauce immediately before serving to maintain maximum crispiness. Serve them hot, whether as an appetizer, main course, or party snack and enjoy!
Storage and Reheating Instructions
- Oven (Recommended for Crispy Texture): Preheat to 375°F and bake for 10-15 minutes.
- Air Fryer: Preheat to 375°F and air fry for 5-8 minutes.
- Microwave: Heat in 30-second intervals until warmed through. While this method is convenient, the microwave can make the wings lose their crispiness.
- Stovetop (Pan or Skillet): Reheat in a skillet with a bit of oil until heated.

We thought it would work better with the crispness of deep fried wings. The texture of the air fryer wings did not stand up well against this sauce. Also, the sauce was just too many competing flavors. It could easily do well with just 3-4 ingredients.
This was delicious! Will make again.
Amazing! Thanks so much Kelly – glad you enjoyed!
So damn delicious! I’ll be making these frequently!
Yayyy! Love to hear it! They are a fave of mine as well! 🙂
I liked that I could control the amount of salt. And much better then using vh sauces. Will definitely use again.
Hi Jacqui! I couldn’t agree more! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed controlling the salt and found it better than VH sauces! It’s great to know you’ll be using the recipe again. Happy cooking!
